This is clearly a superlative source for terrific red wines at bargain prices. Perhaps the most amazing red wine made in California is Trentadue's proprietary red wine called Old Patch Red. It is a field blend of Carignane, Petite-Sirah, Zinfandel, and Alicante from vines planted in the 19th century. In 1993, the average age of these vines was 107 years. The 1988, 1990, and 1991 Old Patch Reds all possess a superb southern Rhone-like nose of oriental spices, super-ripe red and black fruits, pepper, and new saddle leather. There is gorgeous richness, an expansive, full-bodied, chewy lusciousness, as well as considerable depth, focus, and length. It is hard to pick a favorite as they are relatively similar. The 1991 is slightly richer and deeper. It should be apparent that this winery is making a bevy of terrific red wines at bargain basement prices. Their wines all sell for between $6-$12 a bottle. Given their quality/price rapport, these wines will not linger on retailers' shelves.
