The excellent 1994 is the finest Nenin produced in twenty years. The dark ruby color is accompanied by a forward, soft, supple wine with fine ripeness, sweet tannin, and the caressing silkiness provided by Merlot fruit. The wine will be easy to drink when released, and it will last for 7-8 years. This year it seemed far more forward and open than it did last year.
This property has re-emerged in the last several years as proprietor Despujol has rebuilt the cellars and equipped them with modern stainless steel tanks. In addition, yields have been lowered and the percentage of new oak utilized has been increased.
All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.
