The saturated purple-colored 2001 Shiraz Heysen Vineyard was closed (at least on the day I tasted it), but offers a tight but promising nose of damp foresty floor scents interwoven with blackberry liqueur and a hint of tar. Full-bodied, chewy, and unctuous, with high tannin (largely concealed by the wealth of fruit), this primary effort has a promising upside. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.
