The 2008 Saffredi, on the other hand, is a bit mystifying. It comes across as quite understated and lacking the necessary mid-palate juiciness to balance the 75% new oak barrels. Dark red fruit, spices and flowers emerge over time, but the wine’s customary explosive, exuberant personality are nowhere to be found. Ultimately, the 2008 is well-made but lacks excitement. The 2008 Saffredi is 49% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2023.
Elisabetta Geppetti makes some of the most delicious wines in the Tuscan Maremma. Readers who want to learn more about the estate should check out my recently published article on www.erobertparker.com covering verticals of the estate’s twin flagships Poggio Valente and Saffredi.
