The 1993 Clos de L'Obac is one of Spain's greatest red wines. I have only tasted a few vintages, but this is an immensely impressive, gorgeously rich, well-proportioned wine that can easily compete with the world's finest wines. The 1993 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, and Carignane that was bottled unfiltered after spending two years in 100% new French oak casks. In a blind tasting it would be hard to pick this out as a Spanish wine. The 1993 exhibits an opaque purple color, and a huge nose of sweet black-cherries, and raspberries intertwined with smoky toasty oak scents. The wine is extremely full-bodied, rich, and pure, with adequate acidity and good underlying tannin, all of which support the full-bodied, rich style. Supple and opulent enough to be drunk now, it promises to age well for 20 years.
The wines from this up and coming Priorat estate are noteworthy for (1) impeccably high quality, (2) designer labels, and (3) heavy bottles.
