The impressive 1999 Clos de l'Obac is produced a blend of Grenache and Carignan vines ranging in age from 50-100 years, and yields were kept to a microscopic 14 hectoliters per hectare (about one ton of fruit per acre). The wine spent 14 months in new French oak. Sadly, there are only 200 cases for the United States. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by a sweet nose of raspberry liqueur intermixed with black currants, minerals, and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied and rich, with moderate levels of tannin, decent acidity, excellent delineation, and a long, concentrated finish, it is still youthful and unformed. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.
