The 2000 Barbaresco Santo Stefano shows gorgeous site and vintage character in its sweet, perfumed fruit, spicecakr and crushed flowers. Santo Stefano is a warm, south-facing site, and much of that is captured in the wine’s open, inviting personality. I don’t expect this to be a super-long lived Santo Stefano, but it has held up quite well and far better thn the 1997, also from a hot year. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020.
Bruno Giacosa has long been a fan of the 2000 vintage. I found his 2000s quite forward when I tasted them at the winery in November 2010, but far fresher when I opened the same bottles from my cellar in the US.
