Kalin must be the last to release its 1990 Chardonnays ... and no wonder. Still extremely young and unevolved, the 1990 Chardonnay Cuvee LD may be one of the most concentrated Chardonnays I have tasted from proprietors Frances and Terry Leighton. The wine exhibits a mineral/citrusy, subtlely honeyed nose, super-rich, intense, concentrated flavors with a wonderful underpinning of natural acidity, and a long, intense finish. It tends to start off slowly in the attack, but an explosive finish suggests incredible aging ability. Kalin's Chardonnays actually improve with cellaring, so do not be surprised to see this wine age and evolve for 10-15 years. It is scheduled for release on September 1st.The 1990 Chardonnays are unlike any other from California, so if you are looking for tooty-fruity, bubble gum aromas and lavish quantities of new oak you will be disappointed with the distinctive, compelling styles of Chardonnay produced by Kalin.
