The Donnachiara 2017 Taurasi Riserva is very broad, rich and powerful. This hot-vintage wine puts it all out there, and it's a lot to take in. Plummy dark fruit and blackberry pie are followed by sweet oak and cinnamon. The oak tapers out on the palate to reveal soft tannins with baker's chocolate or tobacco. Like other Taurasi wines from 2017, it's almost too much. Some 6,000 bottles were released.

A richly fragrant and savory red, offering lots of mesquite smoke and grilled beef aromas up front, with a sanguine underpinning to the notes of dried black currant, dried flowers, mocha and anise. Medium- to full-bodied but fresh and balanced, feeling light on its feet throughout. Shows fine tannins on the finish.
