Merlot often does very well in Gaiole in Chianti, but the 2001 Le Pratola, the house offering of this variety, is more medium-bodied in style, round and supple, and with a graceful, polished texture, but without the depth of some of the wines made close by. The vineyards are still young, however, and we may just have to wait for a more important Merlot from the estate. Drink: 2006-2012. Importer: Montecastelli Selections, New York, NY; tel.
