In what must be one of the ironies of this vintage, Phelan-Segur's 1993 turned out to be more successful, fatter, and riper than either the 1994 or 1995 - surprising in view of potentially better raw materials for the two younger vintages. The 1993 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, followed by an excellent, smoky, sweet, toasty oak, black fruit-scented nose, admirable fat and ripeness, a good mid-palate with fine purity, and an attractive, medium-bodied, cedary, soft finish with no astringency. Drink this delicious, well-made 1993 over the next 5-7 years. A sleeper!
