Prieur's small parcel (only 2 barrels - 50 cases- produced in 1996) of Chevalier-Montrachet is located just over the Montrachet vineyard. Aged in 100% new oak, it exhibits tightly wound honeysuckle and rock dust aromas followed by a full-bodied, fresh, refined, powerful, and medium-to-full-bodied core. Gravel, honey, and a deep minerality can be found in this well-crafted and outstanding wine. Projected maturity: 2002-2007. The score, noted on a range and in parentheses, indicates that the wine was tasted from barrel.
I was extremely impressed with Prieur's three top wines, the Meursault Perrieres, Corton-Charlemagne, and Montrachet, which are at a level only attained by the very best Burgundian estates. Imported by William Deutsch and Sons, Armonk, NY; Tel. (914) 273-1221.
