The 2007 Aglianico del Vulture Macarico is richer, darker and deeper than the Macari. It, too, shows impressive concentration although here the French oak is more prominent. Sweet balsamic notes develop on the mid-palate and finish, adding complexity and dimension. This is a decidedly fruit-driven style of Aglianico with little in the way of varietal or regional character. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017.
These are two pretty wines from Macarico. The estate has been successful in taming some of the wilder elements of Aglianico, but seems to have given up some varietal character in the process. Nevertheless, this is a good starting point for readers who may be new to Aglianico from Basilicata's Vulture district.
