The 2006 Dorsheimer Pittermannchen Riesling Spatlese smells of sassafras, musk melon, vanilla, brown spices, and honey (reminiscent of Erden). Another 1975-like instance of fresh lively fruit and scintillating minerality folded into vanilla cream, this boasts a dreamy, almost weightless yet mouth-filling intensity, leading to a long, soothing finish. Lovely now, it will be at its best – perhaps a bit sooner than its two Spatlese siblings – at from 5-15 years.
Armin and his daughter Caroline Diel and an expanded crew brought in their entire 2006 crop in two weeks – less than half the normal time. As at so many addresses, yields were low in consequence of selectivity. This is a very fine vintage at Schlossgut Diel, even if not (as its predecessor was) a great one.
