Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru has a licorice-like scent on the nose, sweet black cherries and red plum once you get through the reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy, fine tannin, well balanced with black pepper sprinkled over the extracted dark fruit on the finish. It might lack the sophistication of the best wines from this vineyard, but it certainly delivers the focus and delineation you expect. Tasted September 2016.
