One of the great values in the world continues to be the blend of equal parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese called Vitiano. The 2001, aged three months in wood before being bottled, is a deep ruby-colored effort with vivid aromas of black cherries, new saddle leather, dried Provencal herbs, spice box, and licorice. It is more tightly-knit, and plays it closer to the vest than the more opulent 2000 Vitiano. The 2001 possesses lovely fruit, outstanding purity, and a long, spicy finish with considerable elegance as well as staying power. For $10, this remains one of the most remarkable wine values in the world. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. A Leonardo Locascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
