Still in tank when I tasted it in March, the Raquillet 2008 Mercurey Les Veleys mingles wild cherry, red currant, rose hip, and nut oils. The clay-rich, water-retentive soil of this site prompts an enhancement of already vintage-typical tartness and bright freshness of berry fruit, all of which I find invigorating, although when combined with a somewhat harder-edged sense of minerality than exhibited by the other wines in this collection, it adds up to a brash young Pinot that may strike some tasters as too lacking in polish or richness. I would anticipate at least 6-8 years of versatile performance.
