A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 Cabernet Merlot has a deep garnet-purple color and pronounced notes of crushed black currants, black olives and black plums with hints of Mediterranean herbs, tree bark and pencil shavings. Medium bodied with a solid structure of crisp acid and medium-firm grainy tannins, it has just enough fruit in the mid-palate and a long finish. Drink it now to 2017+.
Although Umamu Estate is a relatively new venture initiated in 2005, the vineyards are well established, dating back to 1978. These early efforts are very good and suggest a lot of potential.
