Although the 1994s are supple, compared with the 1995s, they are less well-endowed, without the latter vintage's fruit and intensity. The deep ruby-colored 1994 Cote Rotie Champin Le Seigneur offers a spicy, oaky nose, and silky, round flavors displaying good ripeness and extract, and an abrupt finish. It is attractive, but I hope more length and character emerge with bottle age. Over recent years, Jean-Michel Gerin has emerged as a high quality producer of Cote Rotie. There are usually two cuvees, the cuvee classique called Champin Le Seigneur, and the luxury cuvee of Les Grandes Places. In 1995, another cuvee, from extremely young vines, Champin Junior, was added.
