The 2005 Chardonnay Clare offers exotic tropical fruit notes, has a medium straw color, seems more tightly knit in the mouth, with more noticeable acidity. This acidity gives the wine tremendous structure and tightness, reminding me of a backward white Burgundy in terms of its structural mouthfeel. This is another beauty that should drink nicely for 5-7 years.
Proprietor Kerry Murphy and his winemaker, Andy Smith, are doing sensational work in the cool-climate areas of the Russian River. This has become one of my favorite tastings of the year, and not only are their Chardonnays and Pinot world-class, but they have extended their brilliance to both Viognier and Syrah. This is a winery that is clearly on top of its game and pushing all the right buttons in terms of quality.
