The 1994 appears to be another decadently rich and opulent expression of Condrieu. It was kept sur lee for nearly a year after being put in the barrel. Full-bodied, with gobs of honeyed, rich, unctuously-textured, thick, peach and apricot-flavored fruit, this wine displays blazingly clear definition and superb flavor extraction, and as a result, it does not come across as alcoholic or heavy. This is another tour de force from one of Condrieu's great producers.
This wine was tasted in September, 1995, from bottle, unless otherwise noted. Prices quoted are based on the current exchange rate of five francs per dollar.
Along with Guigal's new single vineyard offering and the Coteau du Vernon of Georges Vernay, Andre Perret's Coteau du Chery is consistently one of the most dazzling examples of Condrieu. It is hard to find a bottle as every Viognier enthusiast is willing to pay the steep price asked for the small quantities produced.
