Last year I touted the wines of Michel Maret. I liked them so much that I ordered some for my cellar. Michel Maret's top cuvee is his Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. The dark ruby/purple-tinged 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes offers up a broad, sweet bouquet of smoked meats, roasted herbs, and gobs of rich black-cherry and raspberry fruit. Expansive and attractively textured, this deep, full-bodied, powerful wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring; it can be drunk over the following decade and a half. It is an impressively rich wine made from vines averaging 60 years in age. This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.Surprisingly, the only American importer is Geerlings and Wade, Canton, MA; tel. (617) 821-4152
