From just below Bonnes Mares, a 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes exudes a candied yet at the same time faintly tart cherry and black raspberry character, with sage, sassafras and resin overtones very reminiscent of its Grand Cru neighbor, and a silky, refined texture to a palate that, however, never lacks for brightness. Chartreuse-like and red-fruited, the finish here resembles an elixir, yet with persistent freshness of fruit, the pungency of herbs and a faint nip of white pepper offering counterpoint.
Sharing expanded wine-making facilities with her husband, Louis Boillot, Gislaine Barthod continues to render some of the purest, most expressively fruity and consistently excellent as well as ageworthy Pinots in Burgundy. All but the Bourgogne and village Chambolle – recently assembled in tank – were tasted from barrel.
