The 1998 Vin Santo di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice shows more minerality, freshness and verve than the Vin Santo, although in this vintage the wines are more similar than is often the case, if that makes sense. A melange of dried figs, espresso, mocha, sage, leather, licorice and cinnamon are woven together in a rich, lush fabric of indescribable class. The finish turns positively explosive, as the final layers of aromas and flavors totally conquer the palate. Occhio di Pernice is made from Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) that was first air-dried for six months, then vinified and aged for more than ten years in small oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2028.
Avignonesi is one of the best-known names in Tuscany. Once again, the Vin Santos are the show stoppers.
