The 1999 Occhio di Pernice Vin Santo di Montepulciano is a knock out bomb of intensity, beauty and Italian winemaking excellence. This is the ultimate dessert wine. In fact, it goes beyond the dessert wine category for the simple fact you probably will want to drink it alone without a food pairing. I can't think of any dessert dish on earth that could match the profound sophistication and unique beautiful of this wine. It shows some alcoholic heat followed by defined aromas of caramel, prune, raisin, honey-roasted almond, marzipan, cola and balsam herbs. As the nose opens, it slowly starts to reveal bacon fat and smoked bresaola. The complexity is stratospheric. I tasted this sample from a very precious 100 ml bottle.
