Kenwood has been one of the earliest and most consistent advocates of Zinfandel. Their first Zinfandel was produced over twenty years ago, and they have consistently made an attractive wine from this varietal. Given the robust style favored by this winery, I expected the 1990 to be considerably richer and more powerful than it is currently showing. The color, which is only medium ruby, did not reveal the saturation I expected. The nose is also somewhat backward. While there is good glycerin and extract, as well as a spicy, berry fruitiness, the wine lacks the intensity, extraction of flavor, and length that some Kenwood Zinfandels have exhibited in the past. The 1990 should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. Tel. 707-833-5891.
