Produced from vines planted in 1942, the bright ruby-colored Clos Vougeot aromatically exhibits roses, violets and Asian spices as well as a concentrated, highly-structured, powerful, full-bodied and vivacious mouthful of sweet red berries, cinnamon and, surprisingly, distinct notes of fresh ginger. This outstanding wine possesses a ripe tannic backbone that will require cellaring. Depressingly, upon returning to the United States I learned that Christian's wife accidentally broke 400 bottles while moving them in the cellar. Projected maturity: 2004-2012.Christian Amiot has been responsible for this estate's wines since 1990 and the quality of his wines has progressed admirably with each vintage. As Robert Parker stated in issue # 100 (August, 1995), the wines of the Domaine Amiot-Servelle "go from strength to strength." I was quite taken by the opulent yet structured nature of the graceful, juicy, beautifully ripe and extracted wines reviewed in this segment. Amiot is a star in the making.Importer: Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY; tel. (718) 433-4781.
