Notwithstanding the challenges of the vintage, the 2005 Kaplja is a beautiful wine that impresses for its superb balance and harmony. Everything is in perfect balance here, even if the wine doesn’t have its usual level of delineation. Made in a soft, generous style, the wine possesses notable richness and gorgeous tannins that recall a great Nebbiolo. Simply put, this is a gem. Kaplja is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 35% Tocai Friulano and 25% Malvasia Istriana aged in cask. Like all wines that see extended maceration on the skins, it is best served at cellar temperature (rather than chilled), ideally in a glass suitable for Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2013.
These are two beautiful wines from Damijan Podeversic, one of Italy’s most gifted producers. Damijan has decided to delay the release of his 2005 Ribolla, which is still aging in cask. 2005 is a difficult vintage, in particular for the whites, which were affected by botrytis.
