Woodward Canyon Winery, widely acknowledged as one of Washington state's leading wineries, has turned out a bevy of very good wines. However, if my instincts are correct, recent vintages are a notch or two below the spectacular quality achieved with some offerings in the eighties. The red wine releases presented were a mixed bag. I loved the exuberant, dark ruby/purple-colored, lusciously fruity, supple 1995 Merlot. Jammy berries, black fruits, herbs, smoke, chocolate, and spice can be found in this medium-bodied, luscious wine. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
