The 2003 Mestizaje is a fine effort made primarily from the indigenous Bobal grape, with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Garnacha Tintorera included in the blend. It spent one year in old French oak, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Herbaceous, earthy, funky characteristics jump from the glass of this kinky wine. While it is not for everybody, it offers an opaque ruby/purple color, medium body, and loads of fruit, but it is unquestionably avant garde in its aromas and flavors. I found its weirdness to be a turn-on. It should age well for 3-4 years. Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565
