The 2016 Volnay Clos de la Cave includes 50% whole bunch fruit this year. Matured in 15% new oak, it showed a little CO2 on the nose, but there is plenty of ebullient red fruit stacked behind it—strawberry and cranberry, touches of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, elegant in the mouth with hint of Earl Grey and spice, gently fanning out on a composed, quite structured finish. This is in the same class as the 2015 Clos de la Cave.
