Villa Creek’s 2009 Avenger is the only wine in this lineup that doesn’t quite dazzle. It boasts considerable depth, but comes across as overly heavy next to the preceding wines, perhaps because of the greater use of new barrels in one of the lots. The 2009 Avenger is 70% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache from James Berry, Denner and Luna Matta. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
Villa Creek is one of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles. The wines are bold, exuberant and bursting with the essence of everything that makes Paso such a compelling region.
