Soutard remains one of the longest-lived wines in the appellation of St.-Emilion. There is no doubt that the proprietors intentionally pack this wine with gobs of extract and mouth-seering tannins, making it a sure bet to last 20 years, but not approachable before 10. The 1986 is a very backward, unyielding wine, with tremendous tannin levels, but also rich, highly extracted, concentrated fruit. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted, 3/90.
