The 2013 vintage started dark and freezing, and spring was late and cool; so, the budding of the Heerkretz didn't take place until the end of June. Early summer was still cool but dry and only July brought stable high pressure weather followed by beautiful summer weeks without any extremes. After heavy rainfall in early October, the grapes ripened very quickly, which lead to a stressful harvest, one of the latest ever in Wagner's Heerkretz; only the 2004 was picked until mid-November. The grapes for the 2013 Heerkretz Riesling GG were picked between October 13 and 31. The golden-colored wine offers an irresistible bouquet of ripe and elegant stone fruits intermingled with stony/mineral as well as iodine notes, which give a terrific classical Riesling with a coolish and finessed twist. On the palate, this is a highly energetic, juicy-savory as well as saline and elegant Heerkretz with 5.2 grams per liter of residual sugar, which helps to balance the high acidity (8.6 grams per liter) and linear course on the palate perfectly. The finish is still lush and savory and highly stimulating. I have always been in love with the Rieslings from Germany's very best producers, and Daniel Wagner is doubtlessly one of the outstanding protagonists of the vintage. His 2013 is highly recommended and one of the highlights of his first 20 years as a winemaker. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from magnum at the domaine in late August 2023.
