Toasty new oak is apparent in the 1990 Barolo Bricco Fiasco's large-scaled, intensely fragrant nose of black fruits, underbrush, and tar. Full-bodied, with a wonderfully sweet, expansive, chewy mid-palate, and generous finish, this terrific Barolo possesses slightly more structure and tannin than the 1990 Barolo Bricco Punta. It has the capacity to last for 20+ years.
Luigi Scavino, from the same family as Enrico Scavino, has always caught my attention because of his excellent Dolcettos. However, in the two superb vintages of 1989 and 1990, Scavino has turned out some spectacular Barolos from the Bricco Punta and Bricco Fiasco vineyards. The extraordinary quality of these two vintages makes it virtually impossible to pick a favorite. Readers should note the modest prices.
