Turkey Flat's first single-vineyard wine, the 2012 The Ancestor Shiraz comes from a Bethany site that was planted in 1847. Only two hogsheads were bottled after 18 months in oak. Starting with the nose, the wine shows hints of mint leaves alongside strawberry and raspberry fruit. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied (14.5% alcohol), yet it actually feels lighter, being silky and almost lacy in feel, with fine-grained tannins framing the long, mouthwatering finish. Too bad the quantities are so small, and the next vintage to be released will be the 2015.
