A beautiful base Amarone, the 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico shows weight and determination without ever appearing jammy or heavy. In fact, balance is the name of the game and this wine pulls it off flawlessly. You get dried fruit aromas of cherry and prune backed by the luscious bounty of oak smoke and spice. The finish is long, smooth and rich and the wine is teaming with youth. Drink 2015-2026.
Franco Scamperle’s Amarone Pergole Vece is one of the best Valpolicella wines on the market today. Only made in the best vintages from old vines, it sees a longer appassimento and oak regime to increase the wine’s distinctive intensity. Pergole Vece ranks high on my list of personal favorites, but unfortunately I have seen the wine’s retail price creep up suddenly the past few years.
