I was expecting a little more freshness from the 2010 Clos d'Englora Av 14, a blend of Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Peluda and Cari?ena aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, new and used, which seems bit too long as the process leaves a very strong imprint in the wine. It smells of chocolate, spices and smoke more than fruit, and the palate has plenty of dusty, grainy tannins and ends with balsamic flavors akin go incense which is all talking about the élevage. 19,122 bottles produced.

The 2009 Clos d’Englora AV14 is a blend of 64% Garnacha Tinta, 26% Carinena and 10% Garnacha Peluda, a specific strain of Garnacha in which the leaf underside is hairy or velvety, aged for 18 months in oak barrels, which resulted in a pleasant, straightforward spicy nose with a mixture of aromas of blackberries and raspberries and a medium-bodied palate with spicy, oaky overtones and pungent, lively acidity. The 2008 Clos d’Englora AV14 is their flagship wine, a blend of 38% Garnacha, 18% Carignan and a selection of Bordeaux varieties that is aged for 17 months in French and American oak, of which half are new. The nose is again, rather oaky and the gallimaufry of eight grape varieties seems to cancel each other out. The palate is rounded and smooth on the entry, but finally we see the Garnacha and Carinena imposing themselves on the wine, yet the Bordeaux varieties seem to blunt the finish when I was seeking purity and finesse. Drink 2013-2018. Baronia del Montsant is a three-hectare estate in Cornudella de Montsant belonging to Carlos Macias and Xavier Canals.
