The 2009 Sancta Catharina is 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah and 10% Petit Verdot, aged in French oak barrels. It is a decidedly powerful, structured wine bursting with blackberry jam, violets, menthol, licorice and French oak. Though unquestionably an outstanding wine from a technical standpoint, the Sancta Catharina isn’t particularly distinguished from so many other Tuscan wines made in a similar style. The estate’s 2008 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sancta Catharina flows from the glass with layers of plump, juicy dark fruit. The Sancta Catharina has acquired early signs of tertiary development in its aromas and flavors since I last tasted it, although the tannins remain a touch on the firm side. An attractive melange of smoke, grilled herbs, cassis, menthol, flowers and crushed rocks add the final layers of nuance on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017. The estate’s 2007 Sancta Catharina is a blend of Prugnolo Gentile, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that was aged in French oak. In this vintage the wine is remarkably harmonious and well-balanced with no hard edges and terrific balance. The attractive dark fruit carries through all the way to the long, rewarding finish.
