The 2011 Barbaresco Tulin is a light and streamlined expression with moderate intensity and a thin, silky feel in the mouth. The heat of the 2011 vintage has shaped a wine with medium depth compensated by one-dimensional tones of cherry, blackberry and balsam herb. Drink: 2015-2022. The 2010 Barbaresco Tulin shows sheer power and extra concentration that is noticeable both in terms of the wine’s darkened color and the beautiful intensity of its aromas. Opulent oak and spice are wrapped tightly around a solid core of dark cherry and pressed blackberry. The tannins are clearly on the astringent side, but the aging window here promised to be extra long. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030. Giorgio Pelissero has a good amount of news to report from his corner of the Barbaresco appellation. He is putting the finishing touches on a new winery with extra room for storing old vintages. He is also about to announce the acquisition of four additional hectares that will bring his total vineyard holdings to an impressive 40 hectares (with 15 hectares of Nebbiolo in the Barbaresco denomination). A richer, darker set of aromas and flavors emerges from the 2009 Barbaresco Tulin, but it has the same textural finesse and class of the other wines. Sensual and totally compelling, the Tulin wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. In my view, the Tulin has the best integration of fruit, acity, tannin and oak. This is another striking wine from Giorgio Pelissero and his team. The Tulin was aged in a combination of cask and barrique. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. Pelissero is without question one of the top-tier estates in Barbaresco. Every wine in this lineup is solid and well worth seeking out. In particular, the 2009 Barbareschi are some of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here. The management of the tannins – such a problem at other estates – was expertly handled. The 2008 Barbaresco Tulin possesses striking mid-palate sweetness and depth, with lovely inner perfume and plenty of fruit. Sweet dark cherries, flowers and exotic spices are some of the notes that emerge from this fleshy, radiant Barbaresco. This is a wonderfully complete wine in a tricky vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. These are among the finest wines I have ever tasted from Giorgio Pelissero. The 2008 harvest was very much on the later side and began in mid-October. The Vanotu was aged in 100% new French oak barrels, while the Nubiola and Tulin were aged approximately 60% in cask and 40% used French oak. Pelissero credits higher-quality barrels as one of the main reasons his wines are more elegant than in the past, but he isn’t giving himself enough credit. The 2007 Barbaresco Tulin is a wonderfully sexy, open red laced with berries, flowers, spices and licorice. Medium in body, the Tulin is given an extra shade of warmth and expressiveness in this vintage. The finish is long, precise and nuanced. This feminine Barbaresco needs further bottle age, but it is already shaping up very nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. Pelissero is one of my favorite producers in Barbaresco.
