The 2011 Barbaresco Nubiola is a tart and chewy expression with a large delivery of ripe fruit and black cherry aromas that wraps smoothly over the palate. The quality of fruit is bright and buoyant with silvers of dried apricot and an oxidized touch of dried apple skin at the very back. The 2010 Barbaresco Nubiola is a well-priced wine that delivers a beautiful and subdued appearance with bright garnet and ruby highlights. The feminine, but profound bouquet shows tones of pressed blue flower, cherry, wild berry and dark spice. The wine drinks young at this stage and promises a steady evolution thanks to the natural freshness of the acidity and the astringent youthfulness of the tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. Giorgio Pelissero has a good amount of news to report from his corner of the Barbaresco appellation. He is putting the finishing touches on a new winery with extra room for storing old vintages. He is also about to announce the acquisition of four additional hectares that will bring his total vineyard holdings to an impressive 40 hectares (with 15 hectares of Nebbiolo in the Barbaresco denomination). The 2009 Barbaresco Nubiola blossoms on the palate with juicy dark cherries, flowers and spices, all of which come together in a voluptuous style that is highly appealing. Layers of dark, spice-infused fruit swirl around in the glass all the way through to the huge, voluptuous finish. This plush, layered Barbaresco is inviting and offers pure sophistication from the very first taste. Pelissero aged the Nubiola in a blend of cask and barrique. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Pelissero is without question one of the top-tier estates in Barbaresco. Every wine in this lineup is solid and well worth seeking out. In particular, the 2009 Barbareschi are some of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here. The management of the tannins – such a problem at other estates – was expertly handled. The 2008 Barbaresco Nubiola wafts from the glass with crushed flowers, sweet herbs, licorice and spices, all of which add complexity to the fruit. The Nubiola is deceptively medium in body. With time it fleshes out beautifully, showing terrific richness for the vintage. A firm, poised finish has the last say. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. These are among the finest wines I have ever tasted from Giorgio Pelissero. The 2008 harvest was very much on the later side and began in mid-October. The Vanotu was aged in 100% new French oak barrels, while the Nubiola and Tulin were aged approximately 60% in cask and 40% used French oak. Pelissero credits higher-quality barrels as one of the main reasons his wines are more elegant than in the past, but he isn’t giving himself enough credit. The 2007 Barbaresco Nubiola caresses the palate with layers of round, sumptuous fruit. This is a more generous, enveloping style than the Tulin, and shows just an extra touch more depth. Dark red fruit, sweet spices, flowers, licorice and new leather come together beautifully in this harmonious Barbaresco. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.
