The 2005 COLHEITA is a blend of Tinta Roriz (65%), Touriga Nacional (20%) and Touriga Franca. There were 3,333 cases produced. The use of “Colheita” here signifies nothing beyond “tinto from a particular year,” i.e, a vintage red. Despite the lush, oak-driven texture, the wine shows some character and distinction, perhaps because of its earthy and slightly gamey notes, which some will appreciate and some may not. I rather liked its flavor profile—which in fact may have been its best feature. It is modest in the mid-palate, with ripe tannins providing some intensity and vibrancy. Quite charming, although a bit short on the finish, I would not expect it to gain much complexity with cellaring. It plainly lacks the depth of its big brother, the 2005 Reserva, and will be early maturing. Drink now-2014.Quinta do Portal is a winery that seems poised for a breakthrough. From what I have tasted, the wines have been consistently improving. The current lineup provides some very nice values.Importer: M Imports, LLC, Coppell, TX; tel: (214) 505-0616.
