Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the chateau, the 1900 Batailley comes from a mythical vintage that I have only encountered a couple of times. This bottle displayed wider bricking on the rim compared to the 1881 or the 1904 Batailley. The nose is well defined with scents of brown sugar, rosewater and chestnut, still fresh but missing a little vigor. Hold the presses! Incredibly, returning to my glass after 30 minutes, it had somehow gained intensity and developed a gorgeous lavender scent. The palate is mature, as you would expect, very elegant with still some freshness extant. It is classic old Claret, really, a little leathery with undergrowth and tobacco notes on the finish, but it is still clear that this once would have had immense weight and concentration. It's a lovely "old dame," like your favorite comfy old armchair that has seen better days but is still so comfortable. Tasted April 2016.
