Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the chateau, the 1904 Batailley comes from a vintage that nowadays is extremely rare. In the glass, it was evident that here was a 112-year-old wine, but it remained clear in color, with commensurate bricking on the rim. The nose was ferrous at first, with a touch of volatility, Burgundy-like before developing pastille-like fruit, scents of orange blossom and peony. The palate is medium-bodied and surprisingly sweet on the entry, soft in texture with moderate acidity. There are touches of leather here, with dried blood toward the light and slightly bony finish. But one of the advantages of having an hour to examine a wine like this is to witness the changes in the glass, and it inexplicably coalesced rather than oxidized and was actually better after 60 minutes! Perhaps it would have improved even further had I not finished the glass. Tasted April 2016.
