The 1989 Barolo is a more typical Barolo than the 1989 Barolo Ornato. Displaying no evidence of oak cask aging, it exhibits huge, ripe aromas of black fruits intermingled with scents of licorice, spices, tar, and herbs. Full-bodied and deep, with moderate tannin, this large-scaled, intensely concentrated, supple wine will age into the first decade of the next century.
It has been twenty plus years since this estate has produced Barolos of such stature. Pio Cesare has turned out two full-bodied, concentrated, deeply flavored wines that should age for up to two decades. Because of the abundant sweet fruit and ripe tannin in 1989 and 1990, the wines can be approached when released. How delighted I am to see Pio Cesare turn out Barbarescos and Barolos of such high quality!
