The 2001 Malleolus de Valderramiro is a deep purple color with a seductive nose of Asian spices, balsamic, mineral, espresso, and blackberry. Ripe and layered on the palate, this is a succulent offering that is approaching its peak. It can be enjoyed over the next 10-12 years, perhaps longer. Emilio Moro’s Malleolus de Valderramiro is sourced from an 85-year-old Tempranillo vineyard of the same name. Alcoholic fermentation is done with native yeasts after which the wine goes through malolactic in American oak. It is then aged for 18 months in new French oak. Revealing copious oak at present, it possesses extravagant richness, medium to full body, a dense ruby/purple color, and plenty of black currant fruit intermixed with smoke, cedar, and espresso.
