2003 was probably the hottest summer in Italy in over 150 years (official statistics do not go back that far, but unofficial data indicates that this was the case), and ripening grapes in extreme conditions of heat and drought, with temperatures in the vineyard constantly over 100?, was anything but simple. Merlot, an early-ripening variety, suffered the most stress, but brothers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella managed to make a good selection for the 2003 Pesano and turn in a wine with good fruit and freshness of aroma in addition to the usual supple texture and round, warm flavors.
