The 2005 Pinot Noir “Shea Vineyard” is more darkly colored. It exhibits a smoky nose with black cherry, earth, cola, and black raspberry elements. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with a plush texture and the generous, mouth-filling fruit for which the Shea Vineyard is well known. The wine is firmly structured and slightly compact in the finish but 5-7 years in bottle should round out this outstanding effort.
Lynn Penner-Ash had a long, successful career at Rex Hill before starting her namesake winery with her husband Ron in 1998. They are now ensconced in a new gravity-flow winery of their own design. She describes the 2005 vintage as “challenging” both because of the weather and because it was their first vintage in the new winery.
