In 1995, both a regular cuvee and Cuvee Prestige were produced. Both are tannic, backward wines. The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige (made from the estate's oldest vines) is a denser, richer, fuller-bodied wine, with an opaque dark ruby/garnet color, decent acidity, a smoky, roasted herb character, and copious quantities of sweet red and black fruit. The wine boasts good glycerin, high alcohol, and a well-delineated personality. If this wine is bottled naturally, it may merit an outstanding score; if it is fined and filtered as much as I suspect it will be, it may be markedly less impressive than my tasting note and numerical rating suggest. This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.I have written many times about the extraordinary terroir this estate enjoys. Gorgeously situated on the rocky plateau behind the village of Chateauneuf du Pape, Cabrieres is located next to one of the appellation's most renowned under-achievers, Mont-Redon.Importers: Parliament Wines, Atlantic City, NJ; tel.
