The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is the first white Chateauneuf I have tasted from this estate. Made from an intriguing blend of 20% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clariette, 20% Roussanne and 30% Bourboulenc, and aged in stainless steel (70%) and wood (30%), there are fewer than 400 cases of this lovely white wine. It exhibits elegant pear and citrus notes intermixed with hints of melons and wet rocks. Medium-bodied and refreshing, it will provide pleasure over the next year.
This is a property on the upswing, and consumers who have not yet had a chance to taste Proprietor Yannick Gasparri’s wines should be checking them out. I purchased several of his 2007s, and have been thrilled with every bottle. There are three offerings in 2009, two that are undeniable successes, as well as a third that needs more time to pull itself together.
